When you were a child and you wanted a dog, what did you say to your parents? Probably, “Please, can’t we go to the pet store and buy a dog?” Many people do not become aware that adopting a pet is an option until they get older. When’s the last time you heard a child say, “Can’t we adopt a puppy?”
But once you do become aware that adoption is an option, you may wonder why you should adopt a dog instead of buying one from the pet shop. Here are 6 very good reasons to consider!
- You will be saving a dog’s life.
Animal shelters are temporary refuges for pets without a home—not permanent sanctuaries. There are no-kill shelters, but the majority of shelters do euthanize pets, to the tune of millions of animals per year. They simply do not have the space to care for them all. Too many people drop them off and too few bring any home. When you adopt a dog, you will literally be saving his life—and opening up a spot in the shelter for another animal in need.
- You will not be supporting an inhumane industry.
The majority of pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills. These are literally factories where dogs are bred and raised, usually in terrible living conditions. They do not receive proper medical care, space, or companionship. The breeding dogs are caged for as long as they can produce offspring and are bred repeatedly until they can bear no more puppies. After that point, they are simply killed or thrown out to fend for themselves. Adopting a dog means not buying from a puppy mill, which is reason enough to do it.
- Your pet may actually be healthier.
You may think that all dogs that end up in animal shelters are in poor shape or have serious behavioral problems, but many are given up for reasons that have nothing to do with health. Ironically enough, many animals from puppy mills are in bad shape because they have been mistreated. So if you are worried about adopting a pet in poor health because of a lack of financial resources, don’t be. You may actually be better off.
- Adopting is inexpensive.
Adopting a dog is a low-cost or even free process, depending on where you go. As a bonus, many shelters will throw in the cost of your pet’s initial vet visit, vaccinations, and spay/neuter. Sometimes they will even pay for your dog to be microchipped. If you buy a dog from a store, you have to pay for all of that yourself. Adopting means you will have more money to spend on toys, clothes, and accessories for your dog!
- Your dog may already be housetrained.
Intimidated by the idea of housetraining a new dog from scratch? Many pets that land up in shelters have already been housetrained. All you have to do is adapt your new dog to your house. That is a lot less work!
- Because your new friend will love you for it.
And the best reason to adopt a dog? Because you will be getting a new friend who will love you for life! You will literally be changing an entire life. Every day, you will look at your furry pal and know that she is alive and happy and healthy because you decided to make the ultimate difference.
So if you are on the fence about adopting or buying a new dog, definitely choose to adopt! You will be doing your part to change the world for the better, and you will be saving the life of a wonderful animal who will change yours forever.
